Neodymium iron boron magnetic materials are valuable in quantity

The report on the investment prospects of magnets shows that compared to the increasing downstream demand, Chinese neodymium iron boron magnet enterprises are still in the initial stage of development. Whether they can seize opportunities is also a consideration of the development vision and ability of each enterprise. According to Gan Yong, the Chairman of the China Rare Earth Society, developed countries attach great importance to the construction of high-quality rare earth permanent magnet materials, processes, and preparation systems. They have established high-end rare earth permanent magnet materials, achieving high-tech processes and high-end varieties, significantly improving the development level of the high magnetic energy grade neodymium iron boron rare earth permanent magnet industry, and the overall technology has been widely used in household appliances and wind power generation. However, the development of high-end rare earth permanent magnet preparation technology in China is relatively lagging behind. Currently, China’s permanent magnet materials account for over 80% of the world’s total production, but high-quality special rare earth permanent magnet materials only account for 10% of the total rare earth production. The products are basically oriented towards the domestic market, and the export market share is less than 20%, indicating a clear gap.

According to relevant data, there are currently more than 120 enterprises producing neodymium iron boron permanent magnet materials in China, and 5 domestic enterprises have a production scale of nearly a thousand tons. There are more than 20 enterprises with a production scale of over 100 tons, and their industrial scale ranks among the top internationally. However, due to the fact that most of the domestically produced neodymium iron boron permanent magnet materials are mid to low grade products, the vast majority can only be applied in areas with low performance requirements. Therefore, although China’s sintered neodymium iron boron production is among the top in the world, the profits obtained are very limited.

In contrast, several countries with world leading production of neodymium, iron, and boron, such as the United States and Japan, currently have highly competitive large-scale enterprises. Among them, Sumitomo Special Metals, Shinyue Chemical Industry, TDK, and others rank among the top three in neodymium, iron, and boron sales in the world, firmly occupying a cutting-edge position in the neodymium, iron, and boron industry. Faced with such a severe competitive situation, Chinese manufacturers urgently need to optimize the production process of neodymium iron boron, improve their product quality, and gradually move towards high-end fields. This is the only way for China’s neodymium iron boron industry to enhance international competitiveness.
